I actually use this table as a mini standing workbench in my shop, so if you're planning on using it for study, it's sure sturdy enough. I keep scalpels, teasing needles, pens, ect. in the handy edge groove. As a writing surface I think it's probably too rough for a loose-leaf and ballpoint, but that's what clipboards are for.
