We've had this item for about 3 months & really like it. Yes, you will receive a large, moderately heavy box and all assembly is required. Definitely recommend 2 adults to put this together, if for no other reason than to help hold things in place while the other person secures. It took us a couple of hours, just part of an evening really, to put together.
You can customize the height of all shelves, and by making everything DVD height, we had several shelves left over. The depth of the shelves also works great for paperbacks - trade and mass market - if you wanted one unit to hold your cds, dvds and some books depending on your collection.
