I encountered this classic piece of 'form-over-function' 1980s kitsch about 24 years ago, and the memory of the inept, utterly impractical design is still as clear as a summer morning.I'll begin with the Pros:
1. It's pretty.
2. It's just about indestructible (although I see they do sell a replacement whistle, so I might be mistaken).
3. It's pretty!
Now the Cons:
1. It weighs a lot. You need forearms like Popeye to lift this kettle when it's empty. Fill it with water and it's almost immoveable.
2. (Related to the above). It takes ages to boil water. Heck, from cold, it takes about five minutes on a standard burner just to heat up the body of the kettle.
3. (As mentioned by at least one other reviewer) The trigger that you're supposed to pull to move the whistle away from the spout in order to pour water quickly becomes unbearably hot. You need to wear an oven glove to use this kettle.
4. The asymmetrical handle makes it very difficult to control: The black metal handle can also become uncomfortably hot (although not scaldingly so, like the whistle or the trigger) but, worse, the point where one grabs the handle is so far from the center of gravity of the water-filled monstrosity that you'd need the strength and control of a male gymnast to have any idea where you're going to pour the boiling water.
5. $325? For a kettle?! Makes me think of Macklemore: "I call that getting tricked by a business."
This kettle is so heavy, so clumsy, and it gets so hot, that it's not just awkward, uncomfortable (and lousy value for money) it's actually dangerous.
If you care mainly about how a thing looks, if you have little regard for the value of money, and, most importantly, if you don't plan to use this kettle actually to boil water then this is the one for you. If you boil water on a regular basis, then be a sensible person and buy a $30 electrical kettle. If you really want this "look", you could always spend some of the $295 you'd save by not buying this kettle on some tasteful, 1980s Athena-style prints, like this classic:
