DryersLG DLE4870 7.3 Cu. Ft. Extra Large Capacity Electric Dryer with Sensor Dry, White Review
Update September 2013:Just one new thing to report. I noticed that if I put in one or two light items the automatic sensor thinks thing are more dry than they are. In this case just select the "extra dry" setting and things go just fine quickly drying one or two items perfectly.
Update August 2013:
Bedding like comforters and waterbed mattress pads with this dryer take 2 passes. It probably would in any dryer, but it is something good to understand. The dryer tends to wrap the king-sized comforter into ball and the outside parts dry fine, but the inside parts remain quite damp. After the first pass I just pull out the comforter, spread it out and put it back in so the damp parts are on the outside and start it on cotton. The 2nd run generally finished the job in about 10 to 15 minutes.
Bulky and large items like comforters are tough ground for dryers. I can understand how this is necessary. Hope this helps someone get better drying.
Update July 2013:
The dryer is working out great. The only issue is when I leave laundry in for a long time. I get much more wrinkling. If get it out soon or run a partial cycle before removing the laundry it's much better.
I'm very pleased overall. One thing from my old Kenmore I do like better is the door. The door on the Kenmore opened down to become a little shelf. The LG opens to the side and sometimes things fall onto the floor of my basement which is not possible to keep the kind of clean I would like.
I can see why one might not want the shelf-door as bumping into the edge can be painful, but it was oh so useful.
Hope this helps someone.
Original review:
I am a fix-it-up kind of person, but even I reach a point where I'll replace my 25 year old Kenmore. I want to be able to launder my king-size comforter which my old washer and dryer would not handle. Finally I wanted to replace my washer/dryer as a set. In the past 5 years I'd repaired each more than once. It was time.
I looked Whirlpool/Maytag along with Samsung and several other brands. The LG had better customer reviews and the complaints were mostly less severe than the other brands. This is the electric dryer model.
This unit has a pretty wide range of settings. I have mostly used the cotton setting that being most of what I launder. The dry sensor is quite good. The capacity is remarkable.
It handled my king-size comforter with ample room to spare. The part on the outside got perfectly dry. The part that was in the middle of the ball the comforter became while tumbling in the drum was damp at the end of the first cycle. I flipped it around so the inner parts were outside and exposed to the air. About 15 minutes later it was fully dry. This isn't surprising given the nature of the load, so well done.
Regular clothes were dry in about 30 minutes on average. They came out nice and evenly dry. With individual items the drum does a good job of moving them around so they all get dry evenly. (update) if I do not take out the clothes promptly I feel they are more wrinkled than with my old dryer.
I have had the dryer only a few weeks now, and I've only run several loads.
Another interesting feature is called "smart diagnosis" where you can call LG and with a particular set of button pushes get a set of tones to play into the phone. These can be interpreted by the rep to help diagnose a problem. I hope I never need it, but it is cool!
I'll update this review as I get to know the machine better.
